The Modern Approach to Tattoo Healing
Second skin bandages - brand names like Saniderm, Tegaderm, and Derm Shield - have revolutionized tattoo aftercare. These transparent, adhesive bandages create a sealed healing environment that protects your tattoo while letting you see it.
How Second Skin Works
The bandage creates a moist healing environment that reduces scabbing, minimizes infection risk, and often results in brighter, more vibrant healed tattoos. It traps plasma and ink that your body pushes out - this is normal and expected.
Application
Your artist will typically apply the first bandage immediately after finishing your tattoo. The bandage should extend at least half an inch beyond the tattoo on all sides. Make sure there are no air bubbles.
How Long to Wear It
Most artists recommend 3-5 days for the first bandage. If it starts peeling at the edges or fluid builds up excessively, it's time to remove and replace (or switch to traditional aftercare).
Removal
Remove the bandage in the shower under warm running water. Peel slowly from one edge. Don't rip it off - that can pull on healing skin. After removal, follow standard aftercare: gentle washing, light moisturizer, no submersion.
When NOT to Use Second Skin
Skip second skin if you have adhesive allergies, very hairy skin in the tattooed area, or if the tattoo wraps around a high-movement joint. Ask your artist what they recommend for your specific piece.
