Your First Tattoo: A Complete Walkthrough
Getting your first tattoo is exciting - and a little nerve-wracking. Knowing what to expect takes the mystery out of the process and helps you show up prepared.
Before the Appointment
Eat a good meal beforehand. Seriously - your blood sugar matters. Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. Bring a water bottle, your ID, and any reference images you haven't already shared with your artist.
The Consultation
Most artists start with a brief consultation. You'll review the design together, discuss placement, and agree on size. This is your chance to ask questions and request changes. Don't be shy - this is a collaboration.
During the Session
Your artist will prep the area, apply a stencil, and check placement with you before starting. The first few lines are the most intense - your body adjusts quickly. Sessions can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the piece.
Aftercare Instructions
When you're done, your artist will clean the tattoo and apply a bandage. They'll walk you through aftercare instructions specific to their process. Follow these closely - they know what works best for their style of work.
The Healing Process
Expect some redness and swelling for the first day or two. Light peeling is normal around days 3-7. Full healing takes 2-4 weeks. Be patient and don't pick at it.
